I developed the Penguincubator POC in response to a brief that came about after a brainstorm meeting. In short the idea was based around the original Penguin Vending Machine that feature on London's Charing Cross Road. This was a fast paced project and after the briefing on Friday morning, the mockups were created over a weekend and HTML development started on the Monday. A working POC was created with limited but tangible UX and ready by the following Thursday.
It was to take the look and feel of the original Penguincubator and offer users the opportunity to access book extracts and digital content on the go. The content would be served to users that checked in via Foursquare to all high footfall transit hubs - train stations and airports - throughout the UK.
The Penguincubator was first installed outside Henderson's (the 'Bomb Shop') at 66 Charing Cross Road, which signalled his intention to take the book beyond the library and the traditional bookstore, into railway stations, chain stores and onto the streets. It is worth noting, given publishers' frequent timidity in this area, that this really annoyed booksellers.
I created the Penguincubator using HTML, CSS3 and jQuery and rebuilt it in Adobe CQ5 (now formally known as Adobe Experience Manager), but the project stayed as a POC never to be fully released.
I believed in the project and have since developed this further myself in the form of BluePrint, which can be viewed here.
